The Biggest Bedroom Design Mistake (And How to Avoid It)

Redesigning a bedroom is a commitment. Whether it's a full renovation or a few considered updates, getting the sequence right matters more than most people realise.

At Esmé, we see the same mistake again and again.

Don't start with paint

It feels intuitive. Pick a wall colour, then build the room around it. But paint is the easiest element to change, and the least complex in tone.

Upholstered pieces are the opposite. A custom headboard, curtains, and cushions all carry texture, depth, and subtlety that flat colour on a wall simply can't match. They're also far more costly to replace.

Fabric is where most people find the emotional anchor of a room. It's what they fall in love with. If the wall colour is already locked in and doesn't sit well with that fabric, the whole scheme fights itself.

Start with fabric. Build the room from there.

The elements that define a bedroom, such as an upholstered headboard, soft furnishings, and textiles, should come first. They introduce the character and set the direction. Wood tones, metal finishes, and other materials follow naturally.

Gather samples. Build a moodboard with your chosen fabrics, finishes, and furniture. Once these are aligned, choosing paint becomes intuitive. Not the other way around.

Planning a custom headboard? Start early.

If a custom-made headboard is part of your bedroom vision, bring it into the process from the beginning. Not as a final addition.

We encourage clients to select fabric samples before finalising renovation plans. Include them in your moodboard. This creates a clear design direction from day one, prevents costly corrections, and makes every subsequent decision easier.

Fabric brings clarity

Design choices can feel overwhelming. Starting with fabric simplifies everything. It tells you what you're drawn to. It gives you a palette, a texture, a mood.

From there, a bedroom comes together. Calm, cohesive, and intentional.

When a fabric catches your eye, request a sample. See it in your own light. Feel it. Use it for your moodboard. Then decide.
